University of Pretoria MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

  • The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program supports economically disadvantaged young people facing social barriers from across Africa, encouraging them to apply their knowledge toward the betterment of their home communities and countries.

Scholarship Overview

  • The University of Pretoria has partnered with the MasterCard Foundation to offer postgraduate scholarships to high-achieving African students who have been accepted into specified programs at the University.
  • This scholarship targets academically talented young people facing economic and social challenges. These include individuals living with disability, internally displaced persons, or refugees.
  • After completing their studies, the recipients are expected to return to their home countries and give back to the community.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • be a citizen of an African country;
  • have completed a bachelor’s degree;
  • demonstrate outstanding academic performance;
  • have already applied for and been accepted into one of the full-time programs eligible for the MCFSP scholarship;
  • demonstrate financial need and be from an economically disadvantaged background;
  • demonstrate leadership potential and display a commitment to community service.

NOTE:

  • Scholars must demonstrate outstanding academic performance, maintaining a high academic average as a critical component of the Program’s expectations.

How do I apply – Next Steps

  • Apply for admission to UP first to initiate the application process, then download and complete the hard copy application form from the website indicated below.
  • After completing the application, send it electronically to mcfsp@up.ac.za. Attach all the supporting documentation as required.  
  • Your application will then be reviewed, after which you will be notified of the outcome only if you are successful.
  • All eligible applicants will then undergo an interview during the selection process.

  • Leadership qualities
  • Commitment to community service (involvement in projects, school activities or religious activities)
