Scholarship Overview
- The University of Amsterdam aims to attract the world’s brightest students to its international classrooms. Outstanding students with excellent study results and motivation from outside the European Economic Area can apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship.

What does the scholarship cover?
- Amsterdam Medical Center
- The scholarship consists of € 6,000 – € 9,000 – € 12,000 or a proportional amount if the student starts in February.
- Scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition waiver. Applicant must pay the full amount of tuition.
- A scholarship will only be extended to the second year of study if the applicant has successfully completed 80% or more of the maximum number of credits in the first year of study.
- Amsterdam Law School (ALS)
- The scholarship is good for one year, if students complete the first year before August 31, and with high grades, the scholarship will be continued for the second year.
- The scholarship consists of either 6000 €, or 9000 €. In the first month of study – September 2013 – the student will be paid 1000 €. The remainder of the scholarship will be paid in 12 monthly instalments.
- The scholarship cannot be used by way of (partial) tuition waiver: the applicant has to pay the full amount of the tuition due (12000 €).
- The Faculty of Economics and Business
- The total amount for the AMS dedicated to the Faculty is established annually. For the academic year 2011-2012, 20% of students from outside the European Union that started in one of the Master’s programme has been awarded a € 12,000 Amsterdam Merit Scholarship.

- Graduate School of Humanities
- each scholar will receive € 10,000
- It is not a full scholarship; it represents a significant contribution towards living costs.
- Graduate School of Social Sciences
- The scholarship consists of € 6,000, € 9,000 or € 12,000 based on the comprehensive financial plan
- Scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition waiver. The applicant must still pay the full amount of tuition due.
- Scholarship holders will receive their grant in monthly installments.

Am I Eligible to Apply?
The following are general criteria when applying for Amsterdam Merit Scholarships (AMS). The applicant should:
- Hold a non-EU/EEA passport
- Applicant must not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (“Studiefinanciering”).
- Be fully admitted to a degree programme at the Universiteit van Amsterdam.
- Be admitted to a bachelor’s or master’s programme at the Universiteit van Amsterdam for the first time.
- Be enrolled at the UvA as full-time student for the academic year and the programme for which the scholarship is awarded.
- Be able to comply with Dutch visa regulations.
- Should not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AMS scholarship.
- The programme you wish to apply for might set extra requirements such as academic and language requirements.

How to I Apply – Next Steps
- The faculties and international schools award scholarships themselves; as such, regulations may vary. Students interested in an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship may contact the faculty or international school offering the study programme of their choice for more information.
- Amsterdam Medical Center UVA
- Applicants wishing to apply for an AMS scholarship should send an email with their letter of motivation attached to Mrs. M.J.L. Lenoir at m.j.lenoir@amc.uva.nl.
- Amsterdam Law School
- Applicants need to apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship in a letter addressed to the Director of the Amsterdam Law School, Dr. M.Y.A. Zieck.
- The written application should be accompanied by two letters of recommendation regarding the academic qualities of the applicant, a certified copy of the LL.B. diploma and a certified copy of the grades obtained.
- The application for admission to an LL.M. programme of the Amsterdam Law School and a request for a scholarship can be made simultaneously.
- The Faculty of Economics and Business
- Applicants should write an AMS motivation letter in not more than 300 words to get the scholarship.
- Applicants should upload the AMS digital motivation letter to their online application for the MSc programme before the application deadline of the programme.

- Send in your motivation letter specifically for the scholarship
- Prepare a comprehensive financial plan that shows expected income from all sources and all expected costs, to provide insight in the additional funds needed from a scholarship in order to finance participation in the Master’s programme.
- A research proposal, detailing your areas of interest and what you wish to research during your time at the GSSS.
