Every year, especially after high school graduation, there are lots of students looking for good universities to pursue their studies. If you are in Nigeria and looking for a great university to join, take a look at this list of top 10 universities in Nigeria to get an idea of what universities are available.

10. Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA)

  • FUTA was established in 1981, and is located at Akure in Ondo State, Nigeria.
  • Currently, this institution has 8 different schools and more than 50 academic departments, through which it provides its students with an ideal environment for learning, teaching and research.
  • FUTA aims to be a world-class center of excellence for research, training and service delivery.

9. University of Port Harcourt (Uniport)

  • The University of Port Harcourt is a public, non-profit higher education institution that was set up in 1975.
  • This university, one of the top 10 universities in Nigeria, has a strong focus on  Petroleum Engineering.
  • Uniport is located in Port Harcourt, River State, Nigeria, and currently has over 50,000 students.

8. University of Ilorin

  • The University of Ilorin is located in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, just about 500 kilometers from Abuja, Nigeria.
  • This institution was established in 1975. Currently, this university has 90 academic programs offered by its 15 faculties, and has a student population of 48,000 undergraduates and 5,000 postgraduates.
  • University of Ilorin aims to pioneer academic stability and excellence, and to enable all its graduates excel both in Nigeria and internationally.

7. Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMInna)

  • FUTMinna is a specialized University of Technology located in Minna, Nigeria.
  • This university was established on February 1, 1983. It is a federal government-owned university.
  • FUTMInna was established with the aim of giving effect to the country’s drive for self-reliance in the areas of Science, Engineering and Technology.

6. University of Lagos (Unilag)

  • Unilag was founded in 1962 with the aim of providing research-oriented and high-quality education to both Nigerians and international students.
  • Over the years, Unilag has produced several top-level graduates who continue to impact growth and development in Nigeria.
  • Unilag aims to create a culture of excellence and cultivate a legacy of excellence in the Nigerian higher education sector.

5. Ahmadu Bello University

  • Ahmadu Bello University is a federal government research university in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria.
  • This institution has three campuses, i.e. the School of Basic Studies in Funtua, as well as the Samaru and Kongo campuses in Zaria.
  • The current student enrolment for this university stands at 35,000.

4. Covenant University

  • Covenant University, located in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria, is another of the top 10 universities in Nigeria.
  • This university, founded on Christian mission ethos, admitted its first students in October 2002.
  • Covenant University aims to be a world-class Christian Mission University that is committed to raising a new generation of leaders and pioneering excellence through its programs.

3. Obafemi Awolowo University

  • The Obafemi Awolowo University was established between 1961 and 1962. It is located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.
  • This institution aims to be one of Africa’s top-rated universities through nurturing a teaching and learning community, and entrenching a culture of selfless public service.
  • The programs at this university are aimed at advancing the frontiers of knowledge while adding value to African culture.

2. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)

  • UNN, established back in 1955, was the first indigenous university in Nigeria. It is located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria, and has its main campus in the middle of Nsukka town.
  • The programs offered by this university are modelled on the American educational system.
  • Currently, this institution is home to over 20,000 students.

1. University of Ibadan (UI)

  • The University of Ibadan, established back in 1948, was one of the first universities to be established in Nigeria.
  • This institution is located in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
  • UI aims to become a world-class institution for academic excellence, producing graduates who have sound judgment, are worthy in character, and are ready to meet societal needs
