Sweden introduces tuition fees and offers scholarships for students from outside EU

• Up until now, Sweden has been one of the few countries in Europe that has not charged any types of fees. All students—regardless of nationality—have been funded by Swedish taxpayers. Global competition for talent is increasing sharply and the government wants Swedish universities to compete on equal terms with universities in other countries. In the last decade, the number of foreign students has more than tripled, totaling 36,000 in 2008/2009. The government now wants to reallocate some of this money to award higher education institutions that show particular excellence.

Scholarships

• The government plans to introduce a scholarship program for students from 12 developing countries (Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia) alongside a scholarship program that is not geographically limited. As soon as more information is available it will be posted here.

• offers three bachelor programmes in English that are open to international students living outside Sweden:

Malmö University College

Mälardalen University

• offers the following bachelor programmes in English. All programmes at bachelor level offered by the university begin during the fall semesters

IT University of Göteborg – Programme at Bachelor’s level for international and Swedish students:

• The Department of Applied Information Technology offers courses and programmes at bachelor’s and master’s level, and at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. Stockholm School of Economics

• SSE Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics, Stockholm – (3 years)

  The program leads to a SSE Bachelor of Science (BSc), Business and Economics. The first two years consist of mandatory courses.

• SSE Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business, Riga – (3 years)

  SSE operates a highly competitive Bachelor’s Program in Riga, Latvia. The program is conducted entirely in English.

• SSE Bachelor of Science in Retail Management, Norrtälje – (3 years)

  A highly specialized bachelor’s program in Retail Management is offered by SSE at Campus Roslagen in Norrtälje. Please note that Swedish is required.

• SSE MSc Program in Business and Economics – (2 years)

  The program welcomes applications from students with a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics or equivalent.

• SSE MSc Program in General Management – (2 years)

  SSE offers a Master of Science Program in General Management geared towards ambitious students who have a bachelor’s degree in an other subject than economics and business. The program is conducted in English and encourages application from abroad.
