Scholarships for East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST)

Scholarship Overview

  • The Shanghai Government Scholarship or simply SGS is a scholarship program that gives international students the opportunity to pursue their undergraduate and graduate studies in China.

Host School

  • The East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) in Shanghai is one of the host schools of SGS.
  • Established in 1952, ECUST is directly under the China Education Ministry. It is regarded as one of the key research universities of China.
  • Through its International Education School (IES), ECUST have received over 2,000 international students coming from around 140 countries into its halls. Indeed, pursuing a scholarship in ECUST is an experience any foreign student would want to avail of.

Fields of Study

  • ECUST is comprised of 15 academic schools specializing in science, technology, pharmacy, philosophy, administration, economy, law, literature, history and education.

What does the scholarship cover?

The SGS is divided into two categories as follows:

  • Type A/ Full Scholarship for graduate and post-graduate students
    • Covers tuition, basic learning materials, and accommodation
    • Provides the student insurance for major diseases and accidents
    • A monthly living allowance worth 1700 RMB for Masteral students and 2000 RMB for Ph.D. students
  • Type B/ Semi-Scholarship for graduate and post-graduate students
    • Covers tuition, basic learning materials, and accommodation

How many scholarships are given?

  • Each year, Type A/ Full Scholarship is awarded to 10 scholars
  • Each year, Type B/ Semi-Scholarship is awarded to 6 scholars

Which countries are targeted?

  • All countries except China

Am I Eligible to Apply?

SGS scholars are chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Students with foreign nationalities;
  • Good health and disposition;
  • Willingness to abide by the  laws, rules and regulations of the Chinese government, as well as the ECUST’s regulatory framework;
  • Good academic performance;
  • Applicants for the Ph.D. program must be less than 40 years old who holds a Master’s degree;
  • Applicants for a Master’s degree must be less than 35 years old who holds a Bachelor’s degree; and,
  • Applicants who have not received any other scholarships offered by the Chinese government during the same academic period.

How to Apply – Next Steps

  • Applicants to the SGS in ECUST must accomplish the following checklist:
    • Two copies of the accomplished Application Form of Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students.
    • Notarized diploma and transcript, which can be either in Chinese or English translation;
    • Personal essay  about the applicant’s academic background and achievements, research and work experience, graduate program study plan, and personal development goal(s) after obtaining desired degree, among others. The essay must have a minimum of 1000 words for Master’s applicants and a minimum of 1,500 words for Ph.D. applicants.
      • Academic achievements can include title of published paper(s), abstract of paper, and other merit certificates related to research
    • Recommendation letters from two professors or assistant professors; and,
    • Physical examination record.
  • All application materials and requirements listed above must be sent directly to the IES Student Scholarship Evaluation Committee, which will forward valid applications to ECUST. The results of the evaluation and the list of SGS recipients will be announced in the middle of June.
  • Recipients of the scholarship must register at the University on time otherwise the scholarship will be withdrawn and the applicant will be considered to have automatically abandoned their studies.

Closing Date

  • Applications to the SGS in ECUST shall be made before May 15th of every year.
