Scholarship Overview
- The Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation Doctorate Scholarship is a three-year program that aims to train engaged leaders with the skills required to use their ideas to positively address the challenges of their communities, Canada, and the world.
- This scholarship targets remarkable individuals from various disciplines and backgrounds, providing them with benefits like networking, exchanges, and events with the Foundation’s Fellows and Mentors.

- Any Canadian or foreign higher education institution.
Field(s) of Study
- Doctoral studies in research topics relating to the Foundation’s founding themes as below:
- Human Rights and Dignity
- Canada and the World
- People and their Natural Environment
- Responsible Citizenship
What does the scholarship cover?
Recipients of this doctoral scholarship are entitled to:
- Up to $50,000 per year for three years to cover tuition and reasonable living expenses.
- An additional $20,000 per year for three years for research, networking and travel expenses related to one’s doctoral research.
- Membership in a vibrant community of Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows and lifelong membership in the Foundation’s alumni network.
NOTE:
- The annual stipend is paid in three installments per year.
How many scholarships are given?
- Up to 15 scholarships yearly.
Which countries are targeted?
- Canadians studying at a non-Canadian university.
- Non-Canadian students (permanent residents or foreign nationals) studying at a Canadian university.
Am I Eligible to Apply?
To qualify for this scholarship, you must:
- be a Canadian student studying at a Canadian or international university, or an international student studying at a Canadian university;
- be in the process of completing a master’s program, in the first year of a doctoral program or in the second year of a doctoral program;
- be pursuing a field of study related to the humanities and social sciences or human sciences that is directly related to the future of Canada;
- be pursuing doctoral studies related to one of the Foundation’s four general themes as listed above.
How Do I Apply – Next Steps
- Application is done directly to the Foundation through its online application portal. Once you register on the portal and log in, you can access the application form.
- After you complete the form (all mandatory questions), receive notification that all your referees have submitted their reference form, and upload your transcripts, you can submit your application.
