MY FIELD OF STUDY IN RELATION TO A PEACEABLE SUDAN
I would like to pursue studies in international law in order to be equipped to champion for the changes I dream to help make in Sudan. By taking this study, I will be able to learn and appreciate the existing social institutions and culture and therefore be able to know the protocol well before I approach people for negotiation. In my opinion, civil war in Sudan has been brought about by ideological differences in culture, religion and other social aspects. I believed knowledge of international law will give me the right tools to play a role in establishing a peaceable Sudan.
As a lawyer, I would expect to be called upon pending cases of misunderstanding and endeavor to bring peace between the warring sides. My professional of law will enable me to establish a peace and reconciliation commission in the war torn regions of Sudan. I have always cherished the way the work of His eminent Reverend Desmond Tutu bore fruit in South Africa and hence I believed the only way out to peace is communication and forgiveness.
There is a big vacuum for professionals in my country at present and it has been obliged to recruit teachers, doctors, engineers and so forth from elsewhere. The Sudanese people possess a great potential and intelligence and it is purely through lack of education that this has not been realize and the ardently people remain ignorant. As a trained lawyer, though not a politician I would still do all I can to champion for the enactment of policy that guarantees basic education to all children in Sudan. By doing so, their mind will be engaged in other alternatives and there would be little time for them to think of engaging in guerrilla warfare. I believed bad government is often brought about by leaders who are poorly informed, I strive to study law so that I could have a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to liberate our people and enable them appreciate one another without bias consideration.
I hope that by studying international law, I would be able to understand various leadership patterns all over the world, learn their weaknesses and strengths and therefore be able to understand better why my country is torn apart. When equipped with this knowledge, I will be able to empower fellow youth into leadership positions in order to steer our country in the right direction.
Many of my country men have been unjustly detained, banished and even sentenced to imprisonment by the bureaucratic authorities thus weakening the pillars of our communities. I would wish to establish a law firm to help minimize anarchy and promote justice so that our country men could be given the aura of peace to exploit their potential for the betterment of Sudan: much of the problems facing war torn countries are brought about by the existence of bad constitution which pave way for anarchy. As a lawyer and peace advocate, I would work toward gaining for constitutional amendment and reforms that would be able to bind all citizens and turn my country into a hospitable nation. I dread the horror of living as a refugee and I yearn to see a day when one and all Sudanese in the Diaspora will be able to return to their motherland and celebrate peace and freedom from oppression.
Finally, Most Sudanese in the Diaspora especially the youth haven’t ventured much in higher professions and I believe by pursuing the course, many others of like mind will follow suit and join me in the fight for liberation of Sudan. Basically I want to be a role of the youth so that many more can join me as unity is strength.
MY ROLE IN THE FUTURE OF A PEACEABLE SUDAN
As an individual affected by the protracted civil war in Sudan, my dream is to see Southern Sudan become a peaceful country. I have lived through the consequences of the war and it traumatizes me to see its perpetuation.
I was forced to migrate from my own country at the age of three years old to live as a refugee in Kenya but despite all these efforts put by UNHCR and the Kenya government to build us home away from home, I still feel nostalgic about the freedom and safety in my own motherland. This is one reason why I shall never settle for anything less than making my own home-country hospitable.
At a tender age, I saw my father brutally murdered in cold blood as my family members watched helplessly, I saw two neighboring households brought to dust with men and women being killed heartlessly and they all died as if they never died. I must confess that those who fear blood have never known the true meaning of blood, for us who passed through the ordeal when we little comprehended, we never mourn for the dead. Since my emigration in 1992 at an age of three years, it took me time to recollect myself and understand why our folk had to face such a wrath. Being a grown up now, I have with time analyzed and proved that some of the cases of these conflicts as undue and can be avoided. As a youth, I have been so much affected by the civil war and if all other youth have to go through the same ordeal, then I see no future in my beloved country. For the future depend on the ability of the youth, my dream is to see myself equipped with the knowledge to go and enlighten the masses about the treasure of peace, love and unity so that our country can transform back to a great nation.
When I return to Sudan, I hope to help in the following projects:
(a) Establish a youth peace and reconciliation commission which will bring together all the youth from the antagonizing communities to an understanding, abandon the meaningless war and forgive and forget the differences.
(b) I have come to prove that misunderstanding is fueled to some extent by controversial religious dogmas and therefore it is my vision to bring together religious leaders from all sects to understand and appreciate each other religion and culture.
I would endeavor to promote religious tolerance within my own church communities.
(c) Most youngsters are being conscripted into the guerrilla armies against their will since they lack serious engagement due to poverty and illiteracy.
If I had the wherewithal, I would propagate for a compulsory education to all youth to engage and enlighten them so that they cease being misused by warlords as machinery of war.
(d) I wish to get a forum and appeal to the international communities to impartially intervene the crisis in Sudan and engage a peaceful way of terminating the conflicts and assisting the vulnerable war victims further. This is because and due to vested interests of some super-powers, they tend to over-look the situation and take advantage for their own selfish ends.
(e) Poverty is one reason why conflicts escalate as communities fight for the limited economic resources. For this reason, I wish to educate the masses on ways of making money through small scale projects given our rich endowment in unexploited resources due to civil unrest. As an affected citizen, I would like to see a situation whereby my country men live and work together irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds for the betterment of the nation. Indeed the economy of our country has stagnated for the last two decades because there is hardly time for settlement.
(f) Bad leadership has culminated to the pathetic situation where most ignoramuses take leadership position and satisfying their gallant ego by suppressing the helpless folks. I think it is time our national got a chance of participating in democratic election and I would champion for democracy and citizenship rights through publication and awareness compaign if I get equipped to do so.
WHY I APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP.
As one disadvantaged by civil war in Sudan, I have gone through my basic education with a lot of problems occassioned by insecurity, poverty and poor living conditions. I have therefore over years longed to get a conducive environment where I could learn without much fear and be able to exploit my full intellectual potential. Having learned of the provision of DAFI Scholarship, I felt obliged to join it so that I would be equipped to fight for the liberation of the suffering masses in Sudan.
Having been in the Academic limbo for a long time, the establishment of your scholarship opportunities is indeed the only hope for me since I have been yearning for advanced learning in order to get the right position in the society and advocate for a peaceable Sudan.
Anyway the conditions required for one to be eligible for consideration, I believed to fit in the bracket for the following reasons.
(a) I hailed fron Upper Nile region of Southern Sudan and Indeed witnessed the brutal murder of my father at an early age in 1991. This led to the collapse of my family and saw me ending up a fugitive and right now am a grown up and would like to avert the unfortunate circumstance.
(b) Save for the financial and limited intellectual capacity, I have indeed been championing for a peaceable Sudan through writing of articles via New Sudan Vision website that propagate for peace through mass media in Sudan.
(c) On my educational background, I have schooled in Kenya from standard one to eight between 1994 to the year 2002 in Torit Refugee camp before I join Outer-ring High School where I studied from form one to fourth form between 2003 to 2006 up to Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education level (K.C.S.E)
Then after my high school, I was sponsored by Graduate Mobilization Program for Africa where I did a Daystar university accredit Diploma in business management and entrepreneurship from the year 2007 to 2008.
To this present time, am pursuing a bachelor degree course in communication at St.Paul’s university and I have fall short of funds to continue with my second year of studies.
(d) Throughout my schooling, English has been my favorite and major subject since I found it hard to communicate with Kenyan as a refugee. The fact that most of my acquaintances are schooling and English is the official language in Kenya: I have therefore studied it with a keen interest.
(e) One of my hobbies has been writing articles and journals and as a high school student, I was awarded a certificate in journalism and debating for being the most out spoken member and committed writer. I have all along been writing articles and essays like the ones I send to New Sudan Vision website and I believe this strengthen my mastery of English as a foreign language.
Given my vision and mission for a peaceable Sudan, I believe a chance to study at Swansea University through your financial supports will give me the right ground and substance to campaign for peace in Sudan and it will also be a life-time experience to be accorded such a haven of learning atmosphere with guaranteed accommodation, fully funded education and widespread connections. These are the right ingredients I need to groom up as a future peacemaker.
May DAFI live to accomplish its mission!
