Korean Government Scholarship Program for International Students for an Undergraduate Degree

Scholarship Overview

  • Korean Government Scholarship Program for an undergraduate degree is to provide international students with an opportunity to conduct advanced studies at higher educational institutions in Korea in order to promote international exchanges in education and mutual friendship between the countries

Host School(s)

  • National Institute for International Education (NIIED)
  • NIIED is a division of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, is a government organization with the aim to develop and foster human resources in the age globalization and for the globalization of education in Korea.

  • Undergraduate program
  • Grantees should take a preliminary Korean language course at the institution designated by NIIED. The institution will be specified in a letter of invitation after the announcement of final successful candidates.

Academic Programs: Undergraduate degree course (4 yrs.) after preliminary Korean Language course (1yr.)

  • Grantees should take a preliminary Korean language course at the institution designated by NIIED. The institution will be specified in a letter of invitation after the announcement of final successful candidates.
  • Grantees should reach level 3 in TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean)  after the completion of a one-year preliminary Korean language course ; otherwise, grantees are not allowed to take a bachelor’s degree course ; instead s/he may take an additional 6 month Korean language course WITHIN the scholarship period stipulated in a letter of invitation.
  • The grantees with level 5 or higher in TOPIK shall begin to take a bachelor’s degree course from 2014 spring semester without the preliminary Korean language course.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Scholarship Period: March 1 ~ February 28
  • Round-trip economy class airfare
  • Tuition: The tuition fee up to 5 million won is exempted by the Korean Government, and if any, the tuition fee exceeding 5 million won and the entrance fee for the first semester by the host university.
  • Monthly Stipend (800,000 won)
  • Medical insurance (20,000 won per month will be provided – limited coverage).
  • Settlement Allowance (200,000 won upon arrival)
  • Repatriation Allowance: 100,000 won upon completion of studies
  • Grantees with a good command of the Korean language (level 5 or higher in TOPIK) will receive an additional 100,000 won

Which countries are targeted?

  • All countries that have diplomatic relations with Korea

  • A citizen of the country to which the scholarship is offered, which also applies to the applicants’ parents
  • Graduated or will be scheduled to graduate from high school as of March 1st of the invitation year
  • Must have above 80% cumulative grade point average (CGPA), or must be within the top 20% in rank in high school.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

Prospective applicant must meet the following qualification criteria;

  1. Must be a citizen of the country to which scholarships are offered, which is also applied to his/her parents
  2. Should be under 25 years of age as of March 1.
  3. Have adequate health, both physically and mentally
  4. Have graduated or be scheduled to graduate from a high school as of March 1
  5. Must possess above 80% (out of 100%) cumulative grade point average (C.G.P.A.), or must be within 20% (out of 100%) in the rank during their entire high school period
  6. Must not at any time have ever received a Korean government scholarship for an undergraduate course
  7. Must not have enrolled in an undergraduate course in Korea before
  8. Must have no limitations in traveling abroad
  9. There may be preferential selection for applicants who have proficiency in Korean or English

How do I Apply – Next Steps

  • As for detailed information on application deadline and submission of required documents, applicants should contact the APPROPRIATE KOREAN EMBASSY (or Korean Education Center) in the country of applicant’s origin (or in the neighboring country), the organization in charge of the 1st round of selection.
  • Applications DIRECTLY FROM AN APPLICANT or THROUGH FOREIGN EMBASSIES IN KOREA without recommendation of the organization in charge of the 1st round of selection are NOT accepted.

    hello.i wanna get some information about medical scholarships in south korea (specially seoul).but i dont know whether the medical fields are among koreas scholarships or not.i have some questions about it, like :the average marks of high school diploma or the toffel exams mark .i will be so happy if u send the answers to my mail.

    I am Lawrence Ongeri Omosa,an undergraduate student at a local university in Kenya.I am proud to be in college but only that am financially constrained.My parents are not working and mother ever sick.At times am even compelled to use my meager HELB funds to cater for the family needs besides paying for my fees.Surely I need your help and prayers.

    I am RATH KESE, from Cambodia. I was graduated from high school 2008 but no money so can’t be continue study at university, my family pool and my study no very good.
