History
- The Kenya Education Fund was established locally in the in the year 2006 as a society to address issues affecting education of the youth in Kenya.
- KEF was started by a former Peace Corps volunteer called Bradley Border and a local community leader, Dominic Mulatya. They started this organization with the aim of keeping financially challenged students in high school.
- KEF has over 20 years’ collective experience working to promote education in Kenya.
Mission
- To help needy and deserving youth, and their schools, with the support and educational resources required for them to complete their studies. These youth are empowered through education, thus improving their communities and breaking the cycle of poverty.
Scholarship Overview
- The Kenya Education Fund provides scholarships to needy Kenyan students based on need and merit.
- Scholarships are divided equally according to gender – 50% for boys and 50% for girls.
- In 2018, KEF had 680 active scholarships.

Am I Eligible to Apply?
To qualify for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a Kenyan student in Standard 8, Form 1 or Form 2.
- Meet the KEF standards of need and merit. (KCPE score of 320 and above)
- Fill the 2019 application form and submit it to the KEF Nairobi office
How do I Apply – Next Steps
To apply for this scholarship, get an application form from KEF in either of the following two ways:
- a) By mail –
- Send an unused self-addressed return envelope of A4 size already stamped with Ksh 50.00 postage stamps (Kenyan stamps)
- Once you receive the form, fill it in and return it to KEF using the mailing address below. Note that email applications and scanned documents will not be accepted.

Selection Process
- Round 1: Once the applications are received, they are sorted by the Kenyan staff based on gender balance (50% girls and 50% boys), merit and need
- Round 2: The US Application Review Committee goes through the applications and creates a shortlist
- Round 3: The Kenyan staff members conduct face-to-face interviews
Note: Every term, successful recipients are expected to submit a report card, letter to the sponsor and tuition invoices.
