Scholarship Overview

From the fall of 2014, the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) program at Georgetown University began offering a full-tuition scholarship for a talented graduate student from sub-Saharan Africa.

Host School

The host school of this scholarship is Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, a pioneering institution based in the U.S. that has offered academic degrees in international affairs since 1922.

Field of Study

The grant covers one of Georgetown University’s Master’s Programs, the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS), recognized as one of the most selective programs in the world.
MSFS is a two-year, full-time graduate degree program in international affairs that includes courses in international relations, international trade, international finance, statistics and analytical tools and history. Also, students choose an area of specialization such as Global Politics and Security, International Development or Global Business and Finance.

One scholarship is given to a talented graduate student from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Which countries are targeted?

Sub-Saharan African countries, with special consideration given to applicants from Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

To apply for this scholarship, the candidate must have:

Completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited university
A strong academic record
A set of standardized test scores, i.e.TOEFL/IELTS or GRE/GMAT. Visit the school website to find out what tests are required.
Completed a course in microeconomics and a course in macroeconomics, or in a position to complete both courses before August 1 of their matriculating year (or the beginning of the MSFS program in the fall).
Professional experience, ideally in a field related to their future professional goals
An average of four years’ work experience before joining MSFS.

A Supplemental Data Sheet & Foreign Language Proficiency (upload to online application form). Please be sure to fill out ALL sections of the form, including the Language Proficiency section on the last page.
A 500-700 word typed Statement of Purpose
Official transcript(s) (hardcopy or electronic) from all colleges/universities attended (in English)
Letters of recommendation (in English)
Résumé (may be longer than one page; should reflect professional, volunteer or internship experience in the area of international affairs or policy)
Entrance exams (GRE or GMAT, TOEFL or IELTS)
Non-refundable $90 application fee
5-year BSFS/MSFS and BSBA/MSFS program applicants must also upload and submit the supplemental form specifically for 5-year accelerated program applicants.
