Foreign Citizens Admissions
We will continue to consider foreign applicants on a need-aware basis, that is, Brown will take into account their financial need in making admission decisions. However, for those foreign applicants that we do admit, we will continue to meet 100% of their demonstrated financial need.
Foreign citizens who do not receive financial aid at the time of admission will not be considered for aid at a later date. Foreign citizens must apply for financial aid at the time of application for admission and meet all required financial aid deadlines, if they have reason to believe they will need assistance at any point during their time at Brown.
Q. If I applied on time for, but did not receive, scholarship assistance at the time of admission, can I be considered for scholarship assistance in future years?
A. No. If you do not receive scholarship assistance upon admission to the University, you will not be considered for scholarship assistance in future years.
Q. Will I be considered for scholarship assistance during my first or subsequent years if I failed to apply on time, but my family has experienced a sudden change in financial circumstances?
A. No. If you do not receive scholarship assistance upon admission to the University, you will not be considered for scholarship assistance even upon a change in your family’s financial circumstances.
Q. If I applied on time for, but did not receive, scholarship assistance, can I be considered for scholarship assistance upon a sudden change in financial circumstances?
A. No. For students who did not receive scholarship assistance at the time of admission, we will not consider a change in circumstances. You must apply for and receive a scholarship award at the time of admission in order to receive scholarship assistance upon a change in circumstances.
Q. What happens if I lose the funding from my sponsor?
A. Brown will not award scholarship assistance or loan funding to replace lost sponsorship dollars. If you have a sponsor and are uncertain of the sponsor’s commitment, be sure to apply for financial aid at the time of admission.
Q. If I enter Brown University as a foreign student without scholarship assistance and become a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident in a later year, can I be considered for scholarship assistance at that point?
A. Yes, if you become a U.S Citizen or permanent resident while enrolled as an undergraduate, you may apply for both federal and university aid. However, you must submit an on time application for any given academic year prior to being considered for scholarship assistance for that year. Therefore, if you fail to apply for aid on time during the admission process, you will not be considered for scholarship assistance for your freshman year. Students in this situation can apply for federal loans, federal grants and work-study by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you submit an on time application for your sophomore or a later year, you will be considered for scholarship assistance. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of all published deadlines.
