Australia Awards Scholarships

  • The Australia Awards Scholarships are awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia.

Scholarship Overview

  • The Australia Awards Scholarships provide opportunities for people from developing countries to undertake full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.
  • These scholarships provide study and research opportunities that in turn develop the skills and knowledge of individuals to drive change and contribute to development in their own countries.

  • Study programs must relate to the priority areas for development as indicated by the applicant’s home country.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Full tuition fees
  • Return air travel payment for a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
  • An establishment allowance (a once-only payment as a contribution towards accommodation expenses, textbooks, and study materials)
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) – a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by the department.
  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP) – a compulsory program before the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on living and studying in Australia
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award
  • Pre-course English (PCE) fees – if deemed necessary
  • Supplementary academic support where required and if available to ensure a scholar’s academic success or enhance their academic experience
  • Support for fieldwork travel costs for eligible research students in form of one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

  • Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu.
  • Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna.

Middle East

  • Palestinian Territories

Africa

  • Algeria, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt.
  • Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar.
  • Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique. Namibia.
  • Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa.
  • Sudan, Tanzania, The Gambia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

 Am I Eligible to Apply?

To qualify for this scholarship, you should:

  • Be a citizen of a participating country as listed above, and be residing and applying for the scholarship from your country of citizenship.
  • Not be a citizen of Australia, applying for a visa for permanent residence, or holding permanent residency status in Australia.
  • Be a minimum of 18 years old on 1 February of the year in which the scholarship commences.
  • Not be engaged to or married to a person who holds or is eligible to hold Australia or New Zealand permanent residency or citizenship during the application and selection process.
  • Not be a previous recipient of a long-term Australia Award.
  • Not be currently serving in the military.
  • Not have been convicted for any criminal activity.
  • Have satisfied any specific criteria established by the Program Area or the government of the applicant’s country of citizenship (e.g. having worked a certain number of years in an appropriate sector).
  • Satisfy the admission requirements of the institution at which the award is to be undertaken.
  • Satisfy all requirements of the Department of Home Affairs to hold a Student Visa.
  • Not be applying for a scholarship for a course of study at an academic level lower than already achieved
  • Meet DFAT’s English language requirements for receiving an Australia Awards Scholarship and show proof of English language proficiency.

How Do I Apply – Next Steps

To apply online:

  • Go to the Online Australia Scholarship Information System (OASIS) and register. You will then be required to answer some questions to establish your eligibility, after which you will receive a unique registration number, username, and password.
  • You do not have to submit your application immediately. You can set up a draft application form which you can update and add your supporting documentation to. Make sure you submit your completed application on the designated closing date for your country.
  • Ensure that your application does not have any mistakes because it cannot be changed once it is submitted.
  • Note that there is an Applicants Online User Manual on the scholarship website that you can use if you need help.

To apply by mail:

  • Check your participating country profile to get contact details from which you can get a hardcopy application form and any other templates required.
  • Submit your hard copy application forms and supporting documentation via the postal address provided on your country page before the application deadline.
