Universities in Ghana offer several scholarships to support students at different education levels to assist students who are unable to pursue their studies due to financial challenges.

Here is a list of the best scholarships to study at universities in Ghana.

1. University of Ghana Educational Pathways Scholarship

  • The University of Ghana Educational Pathways Scholarship is designed for gifted and needy students who are high educational achievers residing in impoverished parts of the country.
  • This scholarship covers tuition, books, and accommodation. It offers coverage for four years, depending maintenance of excellent academic standards (at least a GPA of 3.0).
  • Applicants should be able to demonstrate that their family income is limited and that they have insufficient funds to cover their educational expenses.

2. KNUST MasterCard Scholarships

  • The KNUST MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program gives scholarships to academically talented but economically disadvantaged young people who are not able to access quality university education. These students are from disadvantaged communities in Ghana and Africa.
  • This scholarship program provides comprehensive financial support that includes tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, learning materials, transportation, and a monthly stipend.

3. Ghana Scholarships Secretariat

  • The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat offers one of the best scholarships to study at universities in Ghana, giving scholarships to brilliant and needy students through Government Funds and donor support. These scholarships are only available for students studying at Ghanaian institutions.
  • Institutions offering these scholarships should be accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB). They include teacher training colleges, colleges of agriculture, nursing colleges, polytechnics, technical universities, and universities.
  • These scholarships cover tuition fees, accommodation, and in some cases, books and living expenses.

4. Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund)

  • The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) provides financial assistance to deserving students who are pursuing Diploma, Higher National Diploma (HND), and Degree Programs. This public trust also focuses on enhancing academic facilities.
  • The GETFund provides financial, academic, and social support to its scholars. The financial support covers tuition fees, accommodation, books, and other academic materials.
  • To apply for a scholarship, one must be a Ghanaian citizen who has gained admission to a recognized tertiary institution in Ghana or abroad.

5. MTN Ghana Foundation Scholarship

  • The MTN Ghana Foundation Scholarship is another of the best scholarships to study at universities in Ghana. Through this program, the MTN Ghana Foundation supports Ghanaian youths in the pursuit of courses at different levels of tertiary education in Ghana.
  • This scholarship targets first-year and continuing education Ghanaian students at public higher education institutions in Ghana who are bright and needy. Students pursuing vocational and technical skills training are also welcome to apply for this program.
  • This scholarship scheme covers tuition fees, research deices, a stipend for reading materials, and accommodation.

6. Joseph and Elizabeth Quansah (JEQ) Foundation Scholarships

  • The Joseph and Elizabeth Quansah (JEQ) Foundation was founded in 2019. Through its need-based scholarship program, it provides tuition and laptops to disadvantaged college and university students in Ghana.
  • This scholarship program targeting undergraduates also provides academic advice, internship opportunities, and graduate school preparedness support for its recipients.
  • To qualify for this scholarship, students must have achieved academic excellence and already be enrolled in a college or university in Ghana with at least a Second-Class Upper division or CGPA of 3.3.

  • Ashesi University, in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, supports high-achieving, financially disadvantaged students from Sub-Saharan Africa with an opportunity to pursue a high-quality education at the University.
  • This scholarship program also aims to develop young leaders who can influence positive change in their communities.

  • This program is hosted at Ashesi University in Ghana.
  • Ashesi University is a coeducational institution that aims to educate African leaders who display integrity and professionalism, by cultivating in them critical thinking skills, a concern for others, and the courage to transform their continent.
  • This University offers undergraduate and graduate programs in various fields, including computer science, engineering, and business.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

To qualify for this scholarship, you must

  • have applied for and received an unconditional offer for an undergraduate program at Ashesi University;
  • be from a low or middle-income family;
  • meet the requirements for an undergraduate degree at Ashesi University;
  • be a student from Ghana or any other African country;
  • be proficient in written and spoken English.

How to I Apply – Next Steps

  • You must submit a completed application form that includes personal essays. You can submit either an online or paper application. Details on how to submit your application are on the university website.
  • Attach your high school transcripts or report cards for at least six terms to your application.
  • You must also attach evidence of six IGCSE (G.C.E. O-Level) passes including Mathematics, English, and Science together with at least three ‘A’ Level passes (with grade A-D).

NOTE:

  • International students for whom English is a second language must submit their results for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Exam.
  • There is an application fee for the undergraduate program, i.e. GH¢ 100 for Ghanaian nationals, and $50 for international students.
