1.Catholic University of East Africa
- The Catholic University of Eastern Africa, together with several partners in development, is offering scholarships to needy students in Kenya. The university will evaluate and screen each applicant according to economic standing, scholastic performance, personality, leadership skills, demonstrated responsibility to the University ideals/activities, and cooperation in community service. The scholarship will provide partial financial support to full-time students of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa who will pass the screening. Students who have not taken their first year in the university and students who are in their final year are not eligible for the scholarship.
- University Tuition Grants: This is a partial tuition scholarship that targets needy but bright students who score a mean grade of B and above in KCSE.
- Other scholarships include The Founder’s Scholarship, Rattansi Educational Trust Awards, Dr. Joe Wanjui Educational Trust Fund, USAID PEPFAR Scholarship, Windle Trust/CUEA Scholarship, and AMECEA Scholarship.
2.Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
- JKUAT has a wide variety of Kenyan scholarships available for its students. Some of these include:
- DAAD Scholarships – These scholarships are for graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa. For a master’s scholarship, one must have a first academic degree, while for a doctoral scholarship, one must have a master’s degree. There are 3 PhD and 8 Master’s slots available at JKUAT.
- Master’s and PhD Scholarships funded by African Development Bank – These scholarships target academic staff members at Public Universities and Public Training Institutions. The programs are offered through ADB, through the Ministry of Education.
- Menemu Scholarships – These scholarships are specifically for students in the School of Nursing, targeting those who are gifted and needy. Successful recipients get their tuition fees paid for a full year, and have the option of re-applying for funding for subsequent years.
- Kenyatta University offers three main types of scholarships, that is, OVS Scholarships, KU Internal Bursary, and the Postgraduate Scholarships.
- The OVS (Orphans and Vulnerable Students) Scholarship is a grant for orphans and vulnerable students from Kenya who are looking forward to achieve an undergraduate degree in the university. The grant provides full tuition assistance for students who achieve a C+ mean grade in KCSE. 70 OVS Scholarships are given to new students yearly, and 20 OVS Scholarship to continuing students.
- The KU Internal Bursary is intended for students who are already enrolled in the university. The grant is awarded based on the need of the vulnerable student.
- The Kenyatta University Postgraduate Scholarships are given to 20 students who enroll for full-time Master’s programs at the university. Selection for these scholarships is based on academic performance at undergraduate level.
- Other scholarships available include Sports Scholarships (5 slots) and Performing Arts Scholarships (5 slots).
- Strathmore University is another great institution that has several Kenyan scholarships!
- Strathmore University has several internal and external financial aid schemes for needy students, in form of loans, scholarships, bursaries, work-study, and tuition waivers. Eligibility differs for each form of financial aid. Examples include:
- Strathmore University merit and need-based scholarships – These are partial and full scholarships offered to students who are pursuing undergraduate, diploma and professional courses.
- Sports scholarships – These scholarships aim to nurture students who have demonstrated talent in sports. Each award covers a percentage of the tuition fee.
- European Union Scholarships – These scholarships are open to final year students in secondary schools who desire to study CPA, Diploma in Business Management, and Diploma in Business IT.
- Other sources on financial aid include EABL Foundation Scholarships, The Mathematics Contest, McKinney Rogers Foundation Scholarships, and Work Study programs.
- Daystar University sets aside over Ksh 30 million yearly to assist at least 300 students through a variety of scholarships and financial aid programs. The eligibility and application process varies depending on the aid program applied for. Some examples include:
- Academic Merit Scholarships – This is a first year scholarship offered to students who attain a mean grade of A or A- in KCSE, and have applied for admission at Daystar.
- Hardship Scholarships – This scholarship is offered to students who are unable to afford to sustain themselves while in Daystar, even with a 75% scholarship. These students are given full scholarships.
- Selected Scholarships – This scholarship covers 75% of the tuition costs. The beneficiaries are re-evaluated annually.
- Other scholarships include Daystar Family and Daystar Sunday partial scholarship, The Book Award, Recommended Scholarship, Work Study Scholarship and scholarships for women and individuals from other special interest groups.
- There are several scholarships and grants available for both undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Nairobi. These scholarships target students who need financial support to undertake their studies. Some of these scholarships include:
- Rattansi Education Fund – for undergraduates
- Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship – for undergraduates and graduates
- Aga Khan Foundation Scholarships – for undergraduates and graduates
- Professor Muriuki Scholarships – available for needy module one undergraduates admitted at the university
- Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Fund Scholarship – for graduates

7.Wangari Maathai Scholarship Fund
- The Wangari Maathai Scholarship Fund is an environmental innovations fund set up in memory of the late Professor Wangari Maathai.
- This fund aims to develop action-oriented young people with strong values who are committed to conserving the physical and social environment in Kenya.
- Every year, the fund awards a tertiary education scholarship to one young woman who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to leadership and civic engagement in environmental conservation in Kenya.
- This scholarship fund targets young women between the ages of 18 and 25.
- The Africa Nazarene University has several scholarships for needy students, including:
- Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship – This scholarship recognizes students who perform well in their final high school examinations. Students who get a KCSE main grade of between A and B+ are considered for this award.
- Alumni Scholarship Fund – These scholarships are available for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The funds donated apply to tuition fees only.
- Olajide Alex-Oni Scholarship – This scholarship awards 50% of the tuition fees and exam fees to one MBA student for one year. This student must demonstrate a deep sense of character and reflect the core values of ANU.
- Every year, USIU-A offers learning opportunities to students from underprivileged backgrounds. Recipients of these opportunities get a chance to experience a world-class education.
- Scholarships at this institution include:
- Full USIU-A Scholarships – Two applicants, male and female, are selected from a huge number of applicants to receive this scholarship. This award covers the full cost of tuition, accommodation, books and all other related costs.
- Partial USIU –A Scholarships – This scholarship covers 100% of the tuition fees for two students, one male, and one female.
- Diversity Scholarships – These scholarships aim to reach out to specific vulnerable members of the society.
- Scholarships for the Physically Challenged – Two full-tuition scholarships are awarded to qualified applicants who must be currently using orthopedic appliances for movement. Selections for this scholarship are based on academic prowess. This award covers the full tuition costs.
- Other scholarships include Scholarships for Under-Represented Communities, the Criminal Justice Scholarship and Sports scholarships for new and continuing students.
Other Kenyan Scholarship Options
- The Board’s objective is to give financial support to needy Kenyan students in institutions of higher learning both locally and abroad. However, due to financial constraints, it is currently not in a position to provide loans to students studying outside the country.
- Currently, students on self-sponsored programs (commonly known as the ‘parallel programs’) can also apply for the HELB loans, as well as those in private universities.
