9 Great Kenyan Scholarships Available for Study in Kenya

1.Catholic University of East Africa

• The Catholic University of Eastern Africa, together with several partners in development, is offering scholarships to needy students in Kenya. The university will evaluate and screen each applicant according to economic standing, scholastic performance, personality, leadership skills, demonstrated responsibility to the University ideals/activities, and cooperation in community service. The scholarship will provide partial financial support to full-time students of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa who will pass the screening. Students who have not taken their first year in the university and students who are in their final year are not eligible for the scholarship.
• University Tuition Grants: This is a partial tuition scholarship that targets needy but bright students who score a mean grade of B and above in KCSE.
• Other scholarships include The Founder’s Scholarship, Rattansi Educational Trust Awards, Dr. Joe Wanjui Educational Trust Fund, USAID PEPFAR Scholarship, Windle Trust/CUEA Scholarship, and AMECEA Scholarship.

2.Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

• JKUAT has a wide variety of Kenyan scholarships available for its students. Some of these include:

1. DAAD Scholarships – These scholarships are for graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa. For a master’s scholarship, one must have a first academic degree, while for a doctoral scholarship, one must have a master’s degree. There are 3 PhD and 8 Master’s slots available at JKUAT.
2. Master’s and PhD Scholarships funded by African Development Bank – These scholarships target academic staff members at Public Universities and Public Training Institutions. The programs are offered through ADB, through the Ministry of Education.
3. Menemu Scholarships – These scholarships are specifically for students in the School of Nursing, targeting those who are gifted and needy. Successful recipients get their tuition fees paid for a full year, and have the option of re-applying for funding for subsequent years.

3.Kenyatta University

• Kenyatta University offers three main types of scholarships, that is, OVS Scholarships, KU Internal Bursary, and the Postgraduate Scholarships.
• The OVS (Orphans and Vulnerable Students) Scholarship is a grant for orphans and vulnerable students from Kenya who are looking forward to achieve an undergraduate degree in the university. The grant provides full tuition assistance for students who achieve a C+ mean grade in KCSE. 70 OVS Scholarships are given to new students yearly, and 20 OVS Scholarship to continuing students.
• The KU Internal Bursary is intended for students who are already enrolled in the university. The grant is awarded based on the need of the vulnerable student.
• The Kenyatta University Postgraduate Scholarships are given to 20 students who enroll for full-time Master’s programs at the university. Selection for these scholarships is based on academic performance at undergraduate level.
• Other scholarships available include Sports Scholarships (5 slots) and Performing Arts Scholarships (5 slots).

4.Strathmore University

• Strathmore University is another great institution that has several Kenyan scholarships!
• Strathmore University has several internal and external financial aid schemes for needy students, in form of loans, scholarships, bursaries, work-study, and tuition waivers. Eligibility differs for each form of financial aid. Examples include:

1. Strathmore University merit and need-based scholarships – These are partial and full scholarships offered to students who are pursuing undergraduate, diploma and professional courses.
2. Sports scholarships – These scholarships aim to nurture students who have demonstrated talent in sports. Each award covers a percentage of the tuition fee.
3. European Union Scholarships – These scholarships are open to final year students in secondary schools who desire to study CPA, Diploma in Business Management, and Diploma in Business IT.

5.Daystar University

• Daystar University sets aside over Ksh 30 million yearly to assist at least 300 students through a variety of scholarships and financial aid programs. The eligibility and application process varies depending on the aid program applied for. Some examples include:

1. Academic Merit Scholarships – This is a first year scholarship offered to students who attain a mean grade of A or A- in KCSE, and have applied for admission at Daystar.
2. Hardship Scholarships – This scholarship is offered to students who are unable to afford to sustain themselves while in Daystar, even with a 75% scholarship. These students are given full scholarships.
3. Selected Scholarships – This scholarship covers 75% of the tuition costs. The beneficiaries are re-evaluated annually.

6.University of Nairobi

8.Africa Nazarene University

• The Africa Nazarene University has several scholarships for needy students, including:

1. Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship – This scholarship recognizes students who perform well in their final high school examinations. Students who get a KCSE main grade of between A and B+ are considered for this award.

1. Full USIU-A Scholarships – Two applicants, male and female, are selected from a huge number of applicants to receive this scholarship. This award covers the full cost of tuition, accommodation, books and all other related costs.
2. Partial USIU –A Scholarships – This scholarship covers 100% of the tuition fees for two students, one male, and one female.
3. Diversity Scholarships – These scholarships aim to reach out to specific vulnerable members of the society.
4. Scholarships for the Physically Challenged – Two full-tuition scholarships are awarded to qualified applicants who must be currently using orthopedic appliances for movement. Selections for this scholarship are based on academic prowess. This award covers the full tuition costs.

Higher Education Loans Board

• The Board’s objective is to give financial support to needy Kenyan students in institutions of higher learning both locally and abroad. However, due to financial constraints, it is currently not in a position to provide loans to students studying outside the country.
• Currently, students on self-sponsored programs (commonly known as the ‘parallel programs’) can also apply for the HELB loans, as well as those in private universities.
