Scholarship Overview

  • The Bonn International Fellowship is a grant program designed to invite excellent researchers from all disciplines to spend a short period (up to 12 days) at the University of Bonn.
  • The program aims to involve the fellows in Bonn’s academic life as much as possible and make them visible to the academic public, as well as open up areas for future collaboration projects between applicants and fellows.

  • The University of Bonn and partner universities in Australia, the UK, Ghana, Israel, Japan, the USA, France, Netherlands

  • Research in any area of specialization

What does the scholarship cover?

  • An allowance of €160 per day (up to 12 days including the day of arrival and departure)
  • A travel allowance (depending on country of origin)
  • Material expenses for events (up to €500 per proposal)

Which countries are targeted?

  • Scholars from strategic partner universities and universities in priority countries for international collaboration.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a post-doctoral scholar or an experienced faculty member who researches or teaches abroad at a university or research institute.
  • Have a strong international reputation in your field of research.
  • Have been invited to the Bonn Fellowship Program by a host from the University of Bonn.
  • Be a scholar from a strategic partner university or a university in a priority country for international collaboration.

How Do I Apply – Next Steps

  • Applications are submitted by researchers at the University of Bonn who have completed a doctorate. These researchers function as the hosts.
  • The fellow (invitee) then declares their agreement to the nomination in an informal letter.

Required Documents

  • Online form
  • Project description (PDF of no more than 6 pages plus the fellow’s declaration of consent), consisting of:
    1. The planned period for the fellow’s visit (month).
    2. Reasons for inviting the fellow, in particular an account of their key research accomplishments and international reputation.
    3. If applicable, an overview of the existing collaboration between the applicant and the fellow.
    4. A plan of how the fellow will be integrated into Bonn’s academic life during his or her stay.
    5. A description of the envisaged short- or long-term outcome of the stay with a plan or list of goals for further collaboration.
    6. The fellow’s informal declaration of consent to the application
  • The fellow’s Curriculum Vitae in PDF format
  • A financing plan

Selection Criteria

  • The scientific reputation of the fellow in their area of specialization.
  • The fellow’s contribution to academic life in Bonn (e.g. through seminars or public lectures).
  • The expected longer-term impact of the stay and a plan to further develop the collaboration between the fellow and the host institute in Bonn.
