Scholarship Overview

  • The Graduate Global Leadership Fellowship provides promising leaders from developing nations with the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies at the University of British Columbia.
  • This fellowship targets international students who show outstanding leadership in development and humanitarian work in their home countries.
  • Fellows are supported to pursue research and study that enhances and supports contributions already made, and those studies that will be of use when the fellows return home to apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge.
  • Recipients of this fellowship are individuals who have an appropriate academic background, and who have a record of contribution to the development of sustainable society in their home countries, through academic, volunteer and professional work.

Recipients of this fellowship receive:

  • A stipend of $18,200
  • Tuition fees paid every year for four years

Am I Eligible to Apply?

All applicants for this fellowship must:

  • Be a citizen of a developing country at the time of application for admission into the fellowship
  • Hold a study permit at the beginning of the fellowship funding period
  • Have demonstrated outstanding leadership in development and humanitarian work in one’s home country
  • Be starting a PhD or DMA program at the Vancouver campus of UBC in January 2018, May 2018 or September 2018
  • Be starting one’s first doctoral degree

Note: Students with external funding are eligible to apply for this fellowship. If successful, these recipients will have their Graduate Global Leadership Fellowship funding reduced by the amount of external funding received.

The evaluation criteria for all applications are:

  • Academic excellence – 30%
  • Research ability and/or potential – 30%
  • Leadership in development of civil and sustainable society in one’s home country – 40%

How Do I Apply – Next Steps

  • Students should complete the application form and submit the required supporting documents (transcripts, letters of reference, etc). The list of supporting documents required is on the application form.
  • Applications should be submitted to the UBC graduate programs, and not directly to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Any application received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will be rejected.
  • Students who wish to apply for this fellowship are advised to verify their graduate program’s deadline well in advance.
  • A complete application package consists of:
    • A completed and signed Graduate Global Leadership Fellowship application form
    • Academic records for all university-level studies, including those undertaken but not completed, up to 31 December 2017. Students who have records from universities other than UBC must submit official, certified true copies of their transcripts.
    • Two letters of reference

Nomination

  • Each UBC program can only submit two applications to the Faculty of Graduate and Professional Studies.
  • A nomination letter (a maximum of two pages long) that outlines the program’s nomination process, nomination ranking and other information to support the nomination process, should accompany these applications.

  • 6 April 2018
