UBC International Scholars Program

Scholarship Overview

  • The UBC International Scholars Program targets individuals who are high academic achievers and have the potential to make a difference in the world.
  • Recipients of these scholarships demonstrate exceptional ability in extracurricular activities, show a desire to create global change, and are dedicated to giving back to their schools and communities.
  • The International Scholars Program offers its scholars the chance to:
    • study with the brightest students in the world;
    • experience unique learning opportunities;
    • earn a globally recognized degree;
    • access dedicated academic advice and support.
  • There are four prestigious need-and-merit-based awards available through UBC’s International Scholars Program. These are:
    • Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award – targeting international undergraduate students who demonstrate academic achievement and leadership skills.Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award – targeting outstanding international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas who have achieved academic excellence under challenging circumstances.International Impact Award – offered to exceptional students who have expressed commitment to and solutions for social justice issues, as well as other issues facing the community.
    • Vantage One Excellence Award – is offered by UBC Vantage College to academically outstanding international students who do not yet meet the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • The awards range in value up to the full cost of a student’s academic program and living expenses.

How many scholarships are given?

  • 50 scholarships every year across all four awards.

Which countries are targeted?

  • International students

Am I Eligible to Apply?

To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • be an international student who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit;
  • be applying for your first undergraduate degree;
  • be entering UBC from a recognized secondary school or transferring from your first year of post-secondary studies at a college or university;
  • have graduated from high school no earlier than one gap year before the academic year you are applying to, i.e. have graduated from high school no earlier than 2023 to apply for admission to UBC in 2025;
  • demonstrate a level of financial need that would prevent you from pursuing your undergraduate studies at UBC;
  • meet all of UBC’s admission requirements that including degree-specific, general, and English language requirements; and
  • demonstrate superior academic achievement.

How Do I Apply – Next Steps

  • Review the application page for the International Scholars Program on the university website.
  • Select the academic program you want to study, and the campus where you want to pursue it.
  • Next, ask your school or a non-profit organization to nominate you for the scholarship. You must also submit a reference from an academic referee. Note that you must first confirm that your school or non-profit can nominate you.
  • Ensure that your nominator and academic referee are aware that you want to apply for the International Scholars Program and that there is a deadline that they must adhere to.
  • Put together your required financial information, as well as notes on any extracurricular activities and awards.
  • Apply for the International Scholars Program by submitting your application by the November 15 deadline.
  • Submit your admission application to UBC by the December 1 deadline.

NOTE:

  • You do not select which award you wish to receive when you submit your application. The admissions team will automatically consider you for the awards that you are eligible for.
