Scholarship Overview

  • The University of Cape Town provides a limited number of scholarships to international and refugee students for postgraduate study in any discipline at UCT.
  • These scholarships are awarded annually on a competitive basis. Preference is given to senior candidates.

What does the scholarship cover?

The scholarship values are as follows:

  • Honors students – R25000
  • Master’s  students – R30000
  • Doctoral students – R35000

NOTE: All UCT international and refugee students’ scholarships act as a supplementary contribution towards the Cost of Attendance. As such, students who apply must have the means to fund their studies.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be either be an international student or have refugee status
  • Have a valid passport or refugee papers
  • Not have previously applied for the scholarship and been denied admission, or had your admission withdrawn
  • Not be in full-time employment (more than 20 hours a week)
  • Not have exceeded the degree tenure – i.e. Honors – 1 year, Master’s – 2 years, Doctoral – 3 years.
  • Not be seeking funding for a 2nd degree at the same level or a lower level

How Do I Apply – Next Steps

  • Applicants must first apply for full-time admission through the UCT admissions office or the faculty office. Note that late applications will not be accepted.
  • The scholarship application is then done using Form 10C which is found on the scholarship website indicated below. This application, together with the required documents is then sent to generalfunding@uct.ac.za.

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of the passport (or if refugee, all refugee papers)
  • Certified copies of Transcripts of ALL previous institutions & certified translated copies (NO CERTIFICATES)
  • Copies of Unofficial Transcripts – For those who have studied at UCT ONLY
  • 1-page abstract of the proposed research – only for Masters and Doctoral applicants
  • CV (incl. a list of publications)
  • 2 Academic Referee reports (either attached or emailed to the email address indicated above)

  • September 30, 2021
