The Orskov Foundation:  The Scotland-based Orskov Foundation offers scholarships for high caliber students from developing countries.

What is the Orskov Foundation?

  • The Orskov Foundation works towards the economic development of the poor, non urban communities around the world.  The focus is on sustainability and the incorporation of community-based projects with knowledge in agriculture.
  • The distribution of resources, such as information, knowledge and the experience, have resulted in many small communities finding answers to the everyday problems which were cause for making life tough for them.  Taking them one step closer to self sufficiency.
  • The community projects are funded by a revolving fund, whereby earlier recipients contribute to the fund when they are in a position to do so.
  • The Orskov Foundation is a member of the NIDOS, which is an association of organizations which are involved in international development and are located in Scotland.
  • The Rt. Hon. Malcolm Bruce, MP from Gordon is the patron of the Orskov Foundation.   At present he chairs the House of Commons International Development select committee.

Who can apply for the Orskov Foundation student grant?

  • Graduate students from developing countries who have registered for a graduate program in a university in their home country and not in the college / university in which they are already studying. The student should also produce documentation which states the full support of the university or organization where admission is sought.
  • Only students who plan to train in sustainability problems of land use with a focus on soil, animal and plant interaction will be preferred.  They should also demonstrate that they would not just gain knowledge but also bring down poverty levels, with benefits to the environment.  This includes blunting the impact of climate change.

How to apply for the student scholarship?

  • Applications for grants will be entertained between October 1 and December 31 every year.
  • You don’t need to send transcripts of your grades, letters of support or your curriculum vitae as they are not relevant to your application evaluation.  Once the application is through the evaluation, then the references will be asked for.
  • The scholarships will be awarded in March and April.  The last date for receiving the applications is December 31 every year. Applications which are received after this date will not be accepted.
  • Applications must be made on the Orskov Foundation application and sent as a mail attachment.
  • The application must be in English.
  •  You are required to fill in all sections of the application form.  If you have left some sections unanswered the application will be rejected.

What will not be funded?

  • Funding for attending seminars and equipment
  • Funding to cover the cost of completing Bachelor, Masters or Doctoral programs: or parts of these courses
  • Funding to cover research for Bachelor, Masters or Doctoral programs
  • Proposals which do not show how poverty could be alleviated or ones which do not demonstrate environmental benefits.
  • Students who are not studying agriculture, environment or land use.

What is the value of the Orskov Foundation grant?

  • The grant will be up to £2,500.  This is the upper limit of the grant.
  • The grants will support the cost of training at the university or organization.
  • Students will have to send in a budget proposal and justification for the funding.   If the breakdown is not provided, the application will not be considered.
