The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students from the countries listed below. About 120 scholarships will be awarded for studies in Sweden, starting in August 2012. The scholarship covers both living costs and tuition fees.
Please note that in order to apply for a Swedish Institute Study scholarship the student must first be admitted to a Swedish university/university college. The application period for study programs opens 1 December, 2011.
The application period for Swedish Institute Study scholarship will be March 14-25, 2012.
Countries
The program is open to candidates from two different categories of countries.
Category 1:
Candidates with citizenship from the following countries:
- Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia
- Asia: Bangladesh and Cambodia
- South America: Bolivia
Within this category around 60 scholarships will be awarded.
Category 2:
Candidates with citizenship from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients. Click here for that list – DAC list. Most countries are listed
EXCEPTIONS
- Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine.
- Citizens from Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine can apply within the Visby Program.
- Citizens from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia can apply within the program SI Scholarships for East Europe.
- Citizens from Turkey can apply within the Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Program.
Within this category around 60 scholarships will be awarded.
Level of Study
Scholarships are intended for studies in Sweden starting in the fall semester 2012 (August).
FOCUS:
- Mainly on master’s level. (Lots of options)
- A few scholarships will be awarded for studies at bachelor’s level.(you can read the entire list of programs offered here - Some bachelors options include – Bachelor of Science Programme in Development Studies (Lund), International Bachelor´s Programmes in Computer Engineering (Mid Sweeden) and Bachelor’s Programme in Business Administration and Political Science (Stockholm University) – this are just a few of the options there are more so please check to see if there is a course you are interested in.
About 600 different study programs at Swedish universities are eligible for a scholarship. The programs have been selected by the Swedish universities and cover a wide variety of study areas.
How to apply for a Sweden Scholarship
Prior to applying for a scholarship, the student must first apply for a study program at Master’s or Bachelor’s level via www.universityadmissions.se, an online application service for study programs in Sweden.
As soon as the results of Swedish university admission have been published at www.universityadmissions.se, the online service for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships will open. Please note that only admitted students can apply for a scholarship. The scholarship application period will be March 14-25, 2012. A list of successful candidates will be published at www.studyinsweden.se and www.si.se in mid-April.
Apply to a study program at a Swedish university by using the online application service at www.universityadmissions.se. The application period lasts between December 1, 2011 and January 16, 2012. Please observe that the personal application number retrieved in the confirmation from your study program registration has to be used when applying for a scholarship.

Sweden Scholarships benefits:
The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 8,000 per month.
The scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in the fall semester 2012 (August) and is granted for of one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time. It will be extended for programs longer than two semesters provided that the study results are satisfactory.
The scholarship is designed to cover living costs and study expenses for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members. The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended beyond the study program period nor can the scholarship be transferred to another study program at a Swedish university.
Travel grants – Scholarship holders will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 10.000.
Insurance – Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

I am Tesfaye Mehari from Ethiopia. I have been graduated from Arba Minch University ( Institute of Technology ) in Applied Geology on 2, June, 2011. I stayed in the university four years in studying geology. During my stay in the university, I took all geology and related courses which have been designed for bachelor degree program and having taken the courses I knew and understood more about earth sciences in general and geology in particular. Since geology is field oriented department, I am familiar to field works because I am experienced in the three field works ( sedimentary petrology, igneous petrology and metamorphic petrology ). Geologists spend most of their lives in field works. Actually this is a must for some one who wishes to be a geologist because without field works geologists are unable to know and understand the geologic processes which formed our planet earth. Having dwelled in tents, geologists feel, understand, know, predict, interpret and simulate all geologic processes which happened in the past, happening at the present and those which will happen in the future. Digging through field works I have been informed about the processes which shape and change our dynamic planet earth. Moreover,I have built my knowledge through my B.SC thesis project. The thesis project that I have run through was on the ” Investigation and Exploration of Suitable Quarry Sites “. From this thesis I not only investigated and explored quarry sites but also I knew and understood the engineering properties construction materials. When I was in the university, I engaged in environmental club called ” Rift Valley Club “. This club is all about how to keep and sustain our planet earth and the universe from pollution and damage. I have further strengthened my understanding about earth sciences from this club. I have also involved in some charity clubs like HIV/AIDS and Anti-corruption clubs while I was in the university. Currently, I am working as an instructor in Haramaya University, Ethiopia.
I am at the beginning of my journey to geology. Indeed, journey to geology has no an end but we may close to the end if we have got our belts fastened and strengthened. I am feeling good that the journey is promising but possible if some one ( to whom I am applying ) is pushing me up to make my journey true and real.
