Finland is a human-scaled, cosy country, with cities and towns designed for people, not just cars. Rush-hours are a rarity.
Our higher education institutions are small enough to operate functionally and effectively. They are all internationally oriented with special regional features, and you can choose between very different study environments ranging from larger urban campuses to close-to-nature campuses.
For an international student Finland is both an exotic and a safe target country. Finnish society is credible: a networked and transparent open civic society, where education is always a top first priority.
Finnish institutions provide over 450 English-speaking degree and non-degree programmes. Some of the programs are short courses, which can usually only be taken as part of an exchange program whilst whole degree programmes take several years to complete, and lead to an official Finnish higher education Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree.
Finnish internationally acclaimed expertise and know-how are present in our international programs. These areas of expertise are ICT, biotechnology, forestry and environmental sciences, architecture, and arts and design.
The content of our programmes is under constant development.
Education is provided in English: lectures are held in English, books are in English, and tests as well. General communication in campuses and elsewhere is in fluent English.
Studying in Finland is generally regarded as relatively free and independent. The relationship between students and teachers in Finland is relaxed and informal, and teachers are easy to approach.
I’ve heard that tuition is free in Finland. Is this true?
This depends on the study programme. Finnish polytechnics and universities do not charge any tuition fees in their Bachelor’s degree programmes, or Doctoral level studies. Several Master’s programmes do not charge a tuition fee, either.
However, some Master’ programmes may have tuition fees for non-EU/EEA nationals. You need to check the tuition fee policy at the institution offering the Master’s programme.
Regardless of whether you need to pay tuition fees or not, you should be prepared to cover your everyday living costs during your studies in Finland.
Can I get by in Finland if I only know English?
Even though English is a foreign language here, it is widely taught at schools and thus most people speak and understand English, so generally speaking you should not encounter any problems. That said, it is still a good idea to try and learn some Finnish (or Swedish) so as to feel more “at home”.
I can not speak Finnish. Is it possible to study in English in Finland?
Finnish universities and polytechnics offer a wide selection of degree options taught in English. You can browse through them by using the study programmes database.
Do I need to take an English language test?
This depends on the programme you are applying to, but most degree programmes require that you prove your English language proficiency by means of an internationally accepted test (TOEFL/IELTS etc). Please check this and other detailed requirements in the admissions instructions of the institution you are applying to. If your native language is English, or if you can prove that your previous education has been completed in English, you may be exempt from the language test requirement.
How can I apply for Bachelor’s/Master’s level studies in Finland?
This depends on which institution or programme you are planning to apply to. The main admission sites are www.admissions.fi (for Bachelor’s level studies at polytechnics) and www.universityadmissions.fi (for Bachelor’s and Master’s level studies at universities). Some programmes however have a different application route, for example, you may need to apply directly to the institutions. Please see the section ‘how to apply’ for advice.
How much does it cost to live in Finland? How much money will I need per month?
Your actual living costs may vary according to how much you need to reserve for rent, food, transport and other such matters – including your own spending habits. The minimum amount required (of non-EU nationals) is currently at least 500 € per month or 6000 € per year. Furthermore, valid health insurance is required of non-EU/EEA students – they must have insurance cover when applying for a residence permit, since without it, a residence permit cannot be granted. Please contact the Finnish embassy in your home country, or go to www.migri.fi for more detailed information on the official requirements for visas and student residence permits.
Can I work in Finland during my studies?
Non-EU citizens studying in Finland can work up to 25 hours per week part-time with their student residence permit, during term times. During holidays (specifically the summer and Christmas holidays) there is no such limitation of working hours.
If you are an EU/EEA citizen, or a Nordic citizen, you can work during your studies without any limitation. However, remember that you are also expected to show advancement in your studies.
Do I need a visa? Or a residence permit?
Depending on your country of origin, you may need a visa if you wish to enter Finland, for example, in order to take an entrance examination. Please note that a visa only allows for a short-term stay (max 3 months) in Finland. If you become accepted as a degree student, or if your studies in Finland last more than three (3) months, you usually need a student residence permit, if you are a non-EU/EEA citizen.
