Airey Neave Trust -Refugee Support
- Those people with refugee status or exceptional leave to remain in the United Kingdom and a letter from the Home Office to prove it. Exclusions: asylum seekers, refugees with asylum status in countries other than Britain, overseas students in the UK on a student visa, British citizens or refugees now holding British citizenship.
- Some preference given to: Doctors of Medicine, Veterinary Surgeons, Dentists.
- How to apply – Applicants should apply in March for the following October and must be interviewed on the telephone by Mrs Hannah Scott (0207 833 4440) in order that their command of English may be assessed as well as their eligibility before application forms are sent out. No new applicants are considered after the 1st of May.
- Average grant award – £1,500 towards fees. Extra needs – applicants will need to find £400/£500 from elsewhere for travel and essential books.
Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative Fund (DAFI)
- UNHCR provides, on a limited basis, scholarships for refugees at the tertiary level in universities and polytechnic institutions through the Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative Fund (DAFI). Funding for this programme is provided by the Federal Government of Germany.
- The purpose of the DAFI Programme is to contribute to the self-reliance of refugees by providing them with a professional qualification for future employment. Scholarships are granted only for studies in the country of asylum. Preferably, UNHCR would like to see the graduates return home and contribute to the reconstruction of their home country, or to the development of the country of asylum or the refugee community at large.
CARA – Refugee Academic Grants
- Grants aim to enable refugee academics achieve employment in the UK at a level commensurate with their skills and experience in the long term. Grants can support refugee academics to re-qualify in a range of professions in the UK such as teaching, academia, engineering, law, the charity sector and medicine.
- CARA holds 2 grant rounds a year, with deadlines for applications every June and December. Decisions on applications are made two months after the deadlines. For details of the next grant application deadline please see ‘Call for Applications’.
The Hegg Hoffet Fund for Displaced Women Graduates
- deals with applications for assistance from graduate women (in special cases tertiary women students) who have been displaced as a result of war, political upheaval or other serious emergencies, and makes short term grants for refresher courses for re-entry into the candidates’ professional fields, and courses for integration into new countries. In case of serious natural disasters, national federations and associations may apply for short-term grants on behalf of university women (women students), who suffered hardship due to the disaster, and who wish to continue their work or studies.
University of Melbourne Refugee and Asylum Seeker Scholarships
- Refugee and Asylum Seeker Scholarships were established by the University of Melbourne with the aim of assisting refugees and asylum seekers with the cost of tertiary education.
- From its office in Khartoum WTI sponsors refugees and internally displaced Sudanese to study undergraduate level courses at universities and colleges in Sudan. To promote gender equity over half the beneficiaries are female. WTI supports scholarships with funds from various donors, and is the implementing partner for the UNHCR Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI). Programme beneficiaries study a wide range of subjects relevant to the social and economic development of Sudan.
I am presently pastoring a church in Hillbrow,in South africa, with a weekly average attendance of between 500 and 600 economic and political refugees from Zimbabwe.I am married to Musawenkosi Ndlovu and we have been blessed with three children, two boys and a girl;Makabongwe[13],Izwen’inkosi[7] and Lwandile[11 months].We are able to pay our monthly rent of R3500.00 and the upkeep of the family.We are also able to pay the school fees for our two sons.Makabongwe is doing Grade 8 and he pays R250.00 per month whilst Izwen’inkosi is doing Grade2 and he pays R190.00 per month.However, we are not able to raise my tuition fees of R15000.00.I am doing my postgraduate studies in Biblical Studies with the University of Johannesburg and am owing the university for the2008 and 2009 academic years.I am expected to register for the 2009 academic year at the beginning of February,2009.Please help.

I stay with my 3 brothers and 3 sisters, my mom is a domestic worker and my dad is unemployed. I came to South Africa when I was very young due to the war, and I have stayed here ever since with my family. Life was hard when we got here but through hard work and perseverance from my parent s we managed to survive the rough times. I stared going to a school called United Church School in Yeoville, from grade 3-10, the school helped us a lot in terms of school fees and so on. In 2007 the school got me an interview for a bursary in a school called Hoerskool WaterKloof Aviation Academy, which was sponsored by OR Tambo and I passed the interview with flying colors. I went to the school for 3years; within those 3years I learned how to fly a plane, flying a plane had become my passion and not to mention I was good at it, I have 6-7 hours in flying. After my grade 12 we had to wait for OR Tambo to call us, so that we could further our flying career as future pilots, but that did not happen due to OR Tambo having financial crisis. Instead of just sitting around and waiting for OR Tambo to call us, I decided to apply for the naïve air force, so I can continue to fly but that was unsuccessful due to the fact that I was not a South African Citizen. So I decided to study Software Development which is my second passion, I’m currently studying Information Technology in the University of Johannesburg, doing my second year by God’s will , because my parents are really going all out for me to get my education. It deeply saddens me that the United Nations an organisation that should be in the forefront of exellence in public adminstration should malfunction as i think it is, I am a refugee from Zimbabwe currently trying to secure help to enable me to proceed with my studies in Public Management and have tried on several occassions to get assistance from the United Nations offices in Pretoria South Africa but noone seems to be interested in my story.
I have tried to call them on several occassions only to be responded to by an uninteresred lady who i felt had an as long as my money comes monthen attitude, i have emailed them a couple of times and no response, i have gone to pretoria from using my meagre savings and spend a whole day looking for their offices only to speak to a security guard who looked equally bored, i am very disappointed, this is a public body and they should lead by example or the place just lacks management.

My name is Paulos Zekarias. I am an Eritrean citizen residing in the country of Sudan as a refugee.
I graduated with B.Sc degree from the University of Asmara, Eritrea in 1997 Majoring Mathematics and my minor was Statistics. Although I graduated in 1997, I was not able either to continue my studies or to work with my work experience as desired due to the boundry conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
After graduation I was recuired at TFanus Enterprise (computer Training Center) as a computer trainer as well as computer maintenant. After staying in the computer training center for about five 8 months, the Eritrean – Ethiopian boarder conflict broke out.
Hence the government of Eritrea forced me to work under the Ministry of Defense as a national service in May 1998. Since then I stayed in that ministry as a national service til the end of February 2009.
My day and night dream was to continue my study to a higher level education; and to imrove and update my work experience to modern world. However my commanding officer didn’t allow me to get such a chance. Therefore I stayed in that Ministy as an IT for only six personal computers. Although I tried to improve my personal skills by taking computer based courses, I am not satisfied with the quality and qualification of the courses that I was getting.
At last I decided to leave Eritrea and to cross to the neighbouring countries either to get a job opportunities with my field of study or to upgrade my study to a higher level of Education. But in Sudan being a refugee, it is impossible to have either.
I don’t think You need to be informed about my financial situation since I am a refugee. I am fighting there just for survival.
It is easy for you to understand that a person who is fighting just for survival can’t afford money to continue with quality education at a higher level education.
Therefore I am kindly asking you to grant me a computer based B.Sc degree level scholarship.

At the moment I am not employed and my main problem is that there is an international IT course that I wish to write but I can not afford to pay the fees. All the interviews that I have gone to, they have asked for that course. The name of the course is called Comptia Linux Certified Professional. So I am asking for some assistance from anyone who is kind hearted to assist me with the examination fee which is R1700. As a person who does not want to raise suspicions, I do not want to be given cash; anyone who is wiling to help can pay directly to the testing centre where the examinations are held. I am a Zimbabwean currently living in South Africa. I am a grade 11 student at one of theschools in the Johannesburg CBD. I am a top student at the school and I always get awards every year.My sister who works as a maid has been taking care of me and paying for my fees were R500 a month. I stopped my studies after my high school graduation due to the life that became so insecured after my dad’s death,i studied Literature in high school and lot of other courses such as Film making(editing,script writing,cinematography,photography and acting),also i know how to draw and can do some paintings,i also have talent in Music performance,i can sing,since my childhood i’ve been doing all these till when my father died and i had no option but to leave the country immediately because we were very insecured.I was with my mother when we left the country but she disappeared and i had move on alone because i could not stay…that time i was 16 years old when i reached the camp.I passing through a very hard time in my life and was so disappointed since no one is there to even mind if i exist,since then i never seen my mother coz i heard she’s dead too and even my elder brother…i tried hard and join a film class in camp supported by Filmaid International,i started writing my own stories and direct them and there was an art class supported by LWF in the camp still..i gathered young boys who interested in drawing and started teaching them how to drow sponsored by a good lady her name is Sally Lincoln,i helped so many of my friend in Filming and Writing but i myself i always wish one day to get a chance for scholarship for further studies to ameliorate my career,i speak French,English,Kiswahili and know Latin.I am a very hard working boy and very honest and believe,trust fear God,i never use any alcohol or any drugs.

I am Mr. Mohammad Khavary a son of Ali, I was born in March 21, 1989 from the group of Afghanistan, and I am living in Iran for more than 20 years. Because of the insecurity country of Afghanistan, We decided to go here and stay here.
In Iran it is complicated for all foreigners to live here, up to, for the Entrance Test in University for us it is so hard to take it and also about the tuition fee is very expensive. From this situation everyone who cannot afford for the tuition fee of their children, they are going to send their children in School), because they don’t have ability to pay this all. And another reason that some of families, they are only choosing one of their children to send in SCHOOL. In other side, for all foreigners it is not permitted to take a job here for monthly job.
And I am one of those families that we cannot afford to do this all, and just only a few money that we have. Like others, that their children was born in Iran, they don’t have ability to do this all. From that situation that when I was studying in Elementary school, too much problem that we have regarding paying a tuition fee, getting a Diploma or a Certificate. Besides, until now since when I was studying in Elementary School up to now they didn’t give me a certificate. From this reason, I decided to go to Almustafa International University (Islamic University for all foreigners). And because of family’s abundance, I got from this situation, and also because my family they didn’t have ability to pay for my tuition fee in High school level, I was sent in Almustafa International University. In fact, for all foreigners it is not permitted to work here but some of those works it is, but it’s so very hard just like worker in construction, a tuber, a water constructor and etc. And because of this, we have to work very hard for the monthly salary that we are working for. And also I am studying at that time. But because of the mercy of Allah I had an ability to do this all and until now I didn’t exit from studying an Islamic Theology.
In other problem, for all foreigners that was finished in High school, some of the Universities they are not accepting their own desires to study (just like I want to study a Mechanical Course) they didn’t accept it and because of this I decided to go to Almustafa International University to study an Islamic Theology. In other side, for an Entrance Test in Universities in Iran that it is so very hard in that time, I studied again in Almustafa International University and until now, I am studying in this Islamic University for a license, and in fact, just only one term it will be finish. But, there’s one thing that I want to do, it is to change my course (that I’m studying right now in this Islamic University) to other course, and it is in your University, from this I decided to go to your University to study that course. How many times I talked to all of my friends about this. One of my friends told me about studying in University but me I didn’t know anything regarding this case. But I want to try it and to continue these things and to be one of your students in this University. But because of your hard acceptable, I decided to write a letter so that you will understand what I want to do. And I am hoping that this will be my chance to study in you University because it is better to hope than to standby alone in our own place. But I became hopeless; because of your hard acceptable that it is written in your Entrance Requirements. And because of all things that I said here that too much problem we have. I don’t have ability to pay this all.. And Language Certificate (English language) in Iran, it is so very hard to get it and it is required that we have a high average.
In other side, I don’t have a time to get a certificate language because of this situation and I am also working in that time. But if this situation is easy to you to accept me I mean to give me a chance to study in your University, of course I will do my best and I will study very hard and to work in your University I mean I also want to be a working student. Because I don’t have a lot of money to pay this all and there is no someone who can help me from this situation. But because of my Aim and Purpose that have a worth (that people want to learn knowledge) me, I have that things and I will sacrifice so that there is no body that can let me go far from this desire. And just like in my country, there is no free learning knowledge. In this thing, I am sacrificing so that I can do this just like others in their country, they are studying knowledge. But this is not a wishing moment because in my country there is too much happenings that until now it is going dangerous for us.
Because of this, there is no chance for us to get a certificate from schools. In fact, in every school there are no any other items. I mean in Afghanistan, we don’t have any items in our schools for learning knowledge just like Books, notebooks, and other items.. Regarding about studying, it is just like a park that we go there and nothing! And also there is no higher level than this four years course (license).
I am hoping that this letter will you read with your mercy and of course with the mercy of Allah, and will you respond this letter so that you can help me from this situation.
