China (including Hong Kong)
Jul 5th, 2008 | By Samuel | Category:Free The Children – Adopt a Village
- We work in China’s rural areas, which are virtually untouched by the country’s economic boom. We began working in China in 2002 following a disastrous explosion in a fireworks factory which killed 38 children between the ages of 8 and 11. This kind of exploitive works is a common problem in China, where almost half the population lives on less than $2 a day, with most of these people living in rural areas.
- we build schools where there are none, and replace schools that are dilapidated or lack basics like roofs and windows. Water and Sanitation projects outfit these rural schools with clean water and latrines, a major improvement in children’s health in a region where most people don’t have access to these facilities.
- Alternative Income initiative include providing families with pigs and other farming support so parents can afford to send their kids to school. The Healthcare component provides lunch programs and health education—a major benefit in an area where nutrition-related diseases like rickets and childhood blindness are widespread.Girls Global Education Fund
- Provides scholarships to girls who would otherwise be unable to attend school. Scholarships are given to girls in primary school, junior high and high school. We cover the cost of sending girls to school for the entire year, and if necessary, we also pay for transportation to school, and lunch. To remain in our program, a girl must complete the school year with satisfactory grades and attendance.
