FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
East African Breweries Limited
- EABL Foundation has announced the commencement of this year’s scholarships that will see 20 new students enter private and public universities across East Africa.
- This year EABL Foundation scholarships reach a new milestone with over 120 students educated by the Foundation at a cost of Kshs 110 Million in the past eight years.
- The applications will be open to bright but needy students across the region wishing to study Business, Information Technology, Engineering and Food Science.
- Applications for a place on Strathmore University to study Business, Commerce and Information Technology will close on 22nd June while those wishing to study Engineering or Food Science in the public Universities have until July 25th to apply.
- Students who sat for their KCSE in 2007 and have been invited to join any public universities can apply for the scholarships to public university while those who sat for their exams in 2008 and want to attend private university will be eligible for Strathmore University.
Heriot-Watt University – African Watt Club Fund
- The African Watt Club Fund was set up in May 2009 and aims to generate between £10,000 and £40,000 per year to allow scholarships of up to £10,000 to be awarded to students from Africa who would otherwise be unable to attend the University, due to financial restrictions.
- The criteria for the award of the Scholarship can be found by clicking here. We plan to award the first Scholarship(s) in June 2010 in time for the academic year commencing in September 2010.
- UPDATE JAN 2012 – Unfortunately we have not been able to fund our African Scholarship for this year. We hope to have funding in place for next year and I’ll look to contact you then to add the information back up.

Australian Development Scholarship Program (ADS)
- The Africa ADS program provides academic scholarships to undertake Master Degrees and Postgraduate Diplomas to nationals of Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Botswana. - The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of Scholarships for African Students each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July.
- Dedicated to supporting the research of individual scholars in Africa, strengthening partnerships among scholars in Africa and the United States, and enriching the study of Africa. Located in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, the Program draws on the resources of a consortium of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The five colleges are renowned for a 40-year history of cooperation and innovation in higher education, and have one of the largest concentrations of Africanist faculty in the United States.
- Originally set up by Dorothy Hodgkin, Chancellor of the University, 1970-1988, for students in Africa. The scholarship is given to students from Developing Countries where they cannot receive higher education for political or social reasons. Hodgkin scholars are usually expected, after their year at Bristol, to impart their knowledge to their fellow countrymen.
- MOHAMEDALI KARIMJEE TRUST

University of Edinburgh Southern African Scholarships
- will offer two scholarships for postgraduate study in any subject offered by the University to students from Southern African countries. One of the scholarships will be available for a one year Master’s degree programme and the other scholarship for a three year PhD degree programme.

Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships
- Provides up to eight new full-fee Scholarships for African Students to be available in 2007/2008 to new full-time international taught postgraduate students from Africa. Coverss 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year. Funded through a combination of generous external funding and University funds. Standards required are very high. Students will be expected to fund their travel and maintanence costs through other sources.
Malaria Capacity Development Consortium (MCDC) - PhD Programme
- The MCDC PhD programme offers support to candidates of high academic calibre who can demonstrate a strong commitment to research relevant to the prevention or control of malaria.
- A rigorous procedure will be used to select the most able African students to pursue PhD studies based in the African countries participating in the programme – Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda. Approximately 20 students will be selected, and each allocated to one of the five African partner universities.
University of Bath – Steve Huckvale Scholarships
- are now available from this academic year for international students born in an African country to study a postgraduate taught programme in the field of Engineering or Management.
- The Scholarships for African Students is worth £5000 and will be paid in two instalments of £2500 each. The taught postgraduate scholarship is for one year only and cannot be deferred to a later year. The Steve Huckvale Scholarship can be held with other awards from the University of Bath (such as the University of Bath scholarships). It will be paid in two instalments at the beginning of each semester (October and January) and the second payment will be subject to satisfactory academic performance.
The Wadsworth African Fellowships
- Provides support for African students undertaking study leading to a Ph.D. at a South African university that can provide them with international-level training in anthropology (including biological anthropology and archeology).

My keen interest in medical science and overwhelming desire to become a doctor has been driven by the poor state of healthcare which was apparent to me growing up in Africa. It was customary to see critically ill people, suffering due to lack of medical resources and personnel. I saw at first hand this failure in the healthcare system in Africa while working as a healthcare assistant at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. I recognised at that time the dire need for more doctors to be able to adequately response to the healthcare demand and hence to be able to improve the national health service. It was this experience that triggered my interest in medical science, but it is the desire to care, the caring and emotional importance, the significant responsibility associated with being a doctor and the dynamic and evolving scientific nature of the role, that has led to my life long commitment to becoming a doctor.
My awareness of the spread of HIV has driven my avid interest in becoming a doctor. I want to be able to play a part in the prevention, treatment and research of the disease.
I feel I have prepared myself to both learn and be taught how to best perform in the demanding environment of a hospital.
I am confident that I have the determination and enthusiasm for medicine, which in the future will help me realise my goals of helping people in communities with insufficient healthcare and educating people on how to live a healthier lifestyle
